Part-Time Position (24 hours per week)

Located in the heart of beautiful Alexandra, Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery serves to protect, promote and foster the art, culture and heritage of Central Otago.

We are seeking a hands-on Part Time Manager with experience in cultural institutions to be responsible for staffing, operations, research, administration, finance and security. The Manager will create, promote and manage a schedule of engaging exhibitions, events and activities while building relationships with individuals and groups in the community.

This is a 24 hour per week permanent part-time position, working across the week as required for events and operations.

The ideal candidate will have highly developed organisational and communication skills with experience in management of people and resources in a museum or gallery setting.

The aims of the Alexandra District Museum Incorporated are to protect, promote and foster the art, culture and heritage of the region. This is achieved through the provision of appropriate information and displays in the public museum and art gallery, acquisition of artworks and artifacts according to the collection policy, and the development of relevant educational and community programmes.

Position Title:             Manager, Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery

Reports to:                  Board Chair, Alexandra District Museum Incorporated

Reports:                      3 (Finance/Accounts Clerk, Collection Manager, Front of House Assistant)

Position Purpose:        To hold overall responsibility for staffing, planning, operations, research, administration, finance and security at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. To create, promote and manage an appropriate schedule of exhibitions, events and activities. To communicate through regular communications and reports with the Board of the Alexandra District Museum, the members of the Alexandra District Museum and other stakeholders.  

To work collaboratively with the Board of the Alexandra District Museum and Central Otago District Council to monitor, manage and improve property and facilities.

Objectives:

• Be responsible for management, operations and security across the Museum and Art Gallery – collection stores, public display areas, research facility, and the retail and venues areas.

• Develop, maintain and refresh experiences within the Central Stories complex. Actively promote exhibitions, activities and membership to ensure ongoing public interest.

• Provide leadership and a positive working environment for staff and volunteers. Ensure effective recruitment, training, development, rostering and appraisal practices.

• Establish and continue to build mutually beneficial relationships with individuals and groups in the local community including tangata whenua, the CODC, community organisations, museums, galleries and other community organisations.

• Oversee financial and performance management systems ensuring effective accounting operations including projections, budgeting, monitoring and analysis.

• Work with the Board Chair and other Board members on strategic planning and project implementation as identified.

• Ensure effective and up-to-date policies, procedures and records in conjunction with the Board, Staff and Volunteers – particularly regarding to Collection Management and Health and Safety

• Identify, apply for and manage projects involving revenue generation and external funding relating to the activities and objectives of Central Stories.

• Ensure appropriate contractual agreements and service contracts are agreed and implemented with optimal service, safety and security, as required.

• Ensure regular and agreed reports and recommendations are communicated to the Board.

• Ensure agreed procurement, supply and service practices are followed.

• Perform other duties reasonably necessary for the performance of the position.

In order to fulfil the needs of this position candidates are expected to have:

• Appropriate qualifications and experience in similar organisations.

• Experience in preparing and submitting funding applications.

• Proven ability to manage people, resources and administration tasks and processes.

• Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.

• Experience with technology across online platforms, financial management systems and methods of display or interpretation.

• Ability to communicate at all levels, both verbally and in writing.

• Ability to understand, manage and provide reports on the collection, visitation and financial situation of the organisation.

• Proven ability to deliver high level customer service and visitor experiences.

• A working knowledge of security and environmental control functions.

• Self-motivation and ability to work both independently and as an effective member of the team.

• Ability to weigh up all relevant factors and make timely decisions with regard to long- and short-term goals.
